A survey of 295 married couples suggests that receiving welfare and other forms of government assistance, like food stamps and Medicaid, increases marital dissatisfaction.
A research professor at the University of Missouri authored the study which asked couples about their happiness with their marriage. Among couples receiving less than $20,000 in annual income, couples receiving government assistance were much more likely to respond that they were dissatisfied with their marriage.
The professor acknowledged that finances are widely known to cause disagreement and dissatisfaction within a marriage. However, he said he was surprised to see that welfare dramatically increased the chances of marital satisfaction in couples in the same income bracket.

Model Karen Elson and White Stripes musician Jack White announced last week that they would be filing for divorce after 6 years of marriage. The two did so by sending their friends and family invitations to a celebration of their 6th anniversary and pending divorce.
The couple released a statement stating that they remain close friends and will be ending their marriage in the most amicable fashion. ”We remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow,” read the statement.
